How Does a Knife Gate Valve Work?
A knife gate valve controls flow using a sharp-edged flat blade (gate) that moves vertically within the valve body to open or close the flow path.
Open Position: When the handwheel is turned or the actuator is triggered, the gate lifts completely out of the flow path. This creates a full-bore, unrestricted opening that allows fluids, slurries, and solids-laden media to pass through with minimal pressure drop.
Closed Position: The gate slides downward through the flowing media. The sharp knife-like edge of the blade cuts through fibrous material, slurry, and suspended solids — ensuring a clean, tight seal at the valve seat.
